In this episode, we provide a case update on the story of Shauna Harvey, who was also known as Shauna Garber, and was once an unidentified Jane Doe case where she was called Grace Doe. Shauna’s story was originally covered in Episode 25 of she goes by Jane.
Background
In December 1990, a couple discovered the remains of a woman by an abandoned farmhouse in McDonald County, Missouri. She had been sexually assaulted and murdered. One of the defining features of the crime scene is the amount and types of bindings used in her murder.
In 2008, Detective Lorie Howard began working her case. At this time, she became known as Grace Doe. Detective Howard was able to locate her remains that had been misplaced in the subsequent years and also was able to get a artist rendering of Grace Doe done.
In 2021, through the work of Othram, Inc., Grace Doe was identified as Shauna Garber who was 22 when she went missing. The McDonald County Sheriff’s Office was able to connect with some of Shauna’s siblings. They had all had separate foster care placements. Not much was known about Shauna’s childhood between the time she went into foster care and the time her body was found in McDonald County.
New information about Shauna’s past
In March 2024, a new press conference, hosted by Detectives Lorie Howard and Rhonda Wise, was held to update the public about her murder and past. Since 2021, they have been able to piece together that Shauna was adopted but returned to foster care. This information also shows that Shauna’s name was changed from Shauna Garber to Shauna Harvey, so people would recognize her, likely, by that name.
After she aged out of foster care, she went to eastern Oklahoma. At some point, she was in a halfway house there. That halfway house helped provide labor to Hudson Foods (later Tyson Foods) in McDonald County. At some point, Shauna left this facility and began walking on Highway 59, away from the processing plant. This is where she encountered the man who killed her.
She had been picked up on Hallowwen night which is corroborated with witness testimony.
New information about her murder
Witnesses have been coming forward for years in Shauna’s case, but all of them feared retribution by her killer or his associates. They have been able to provide details about her murder.
She was taken to the farmhouse and sexually assaulted and tied up. During the assault, Shauna began screaming. Fearing people would hear her, the killer injected her with what would be a fatal dose of meth. He left her there by the farmhouse, likely believing he would never be identified in her killing.
Details about her killer
Investigators released Shauna’s killer’s name during the press conference. He had a criminal record that included drug trafficking and assault.
In 2021, he was killed in a car/scooter accident. His death enabled investigators to finally witness testimony in this case. Shauna’s case remains open in case charges against others need to be filed and to help add a layer of protection to witnesses.
Ways you can help
Though Shauna’s family has more information about her life, they are still missing stories of her life and photos of Shauna between her childhood and adulthood. Again, she was likely known as Shauna Harvey. She was born in 1968 and lived primarily in the Kansas area but had connections with Oklahoma and Missouri. Please share out information about Shauna so that it increases the likelihood of someone recognizing her.
